THE leader of a Wirral Brownie group has been recognised for more than 40 years of 'outstanding' volunteer work in The King’s Birthday Honours list.
Carol Marriott, Leader of 2nd Newton Brownies, was awarded a British Empire Medal by His Majesty the King in honour of her services to children and young people.
The 81-year-old has spent the past 44 years helping 2nd Newton Brownie Unit.
She has held many different roles within Girlguiding and has received her 40 years’ service award.
Carol gives girls a space to be themselves, have fun and try new things through the opportunities offered through Girlguiding’s programme of badges and activities.
Carol's Girlguiding journey started as a Guide and a Land Ranger in Worcester.
She re-joined in her 30s and became a Brownie Leader in 1980, and the rest is history.
Carol said: "Girlguiding has given me the fun and liveliness of working with colleagues and the children in our care.
"In addition, I have had UK and international opportunities.
"Trainings at Foxlease as a Ranger, at Waddow as a Leader and a session at the newly-opened Pax Lodge were great experiences as were camps and activity events closer to home.
"Holidays and service at three World Centres gave me such amazing cultural adventures and friendships.
"I'm grateful for all these happy times and hope I have used these benefits to encourage the young people and volunteers I've met in my Guiding life".
Jenny Brown, Girlguiding Wirral county commissioner, said: "It is absolutely amazing for a member of our county to be rewarded for the hard work and dedication it takes to be a brownie – and guide leader.
"A huge congratulations to Carol."
