RMT members have taken to the picket line this morning in Birkenhead in support of Seafarers.

RMT members within the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) are striking over a pay dispute today (Tuesday, June 25).

The 24-hour strike coincides with International Seafarers Day, a day dedicated to recognising the essential contributions of seafarers globally.

All RFA members were instructed not to report for any duties between 12.01am and 11.59pm on June 25 ensuring that essential safety measures, such as maintaining moorings and gangways, are upheld.

In Birkenhead, RFA members have been standing at the picket line near Cammell Laird since 6.30am and are expected to remain until 2.30pm.

Recent strike action took place on May 19 and included participation spanning from ports to ships in distant locations such as Singapore.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: "This strike represents more than just a demand for fair pay; it is a stand for the respect and acknowledgment of seafarers and their crucial role worldwide.

"On International Seafarers Day, our members will shine a light on their vital contribution to international trade and the global economy.

"We call on all members to remain steadfast and united in their pursuit of a reasonable pay increase and decent working conditions, which they rightfully deserve.

"RFA management and the government must urgently address this dispute and recognise the significant anger and frustration among RMT members."
