FRESH cod or haddock coated in crispy batter served with perfectly cooked chips – the ideal treat for teatime.
Selfish in Bromborough is the “top plaice” in Wirral for everyone’s favourite fried food and has just scooped this year’s Best Fish and Chips award, retaining their title.
In April, we launched our Best of 2024 competition.
This year’s search for the area’s best in a whole host of categories started with hair and LA Hair was crowned our first winner, quickly followed by Pies4u who won a prize for their delicious pastry offerings and By Taylor Jade took the best nails title.
Next up, The 21st Amendment Hoylake is officially Best for Roast Dinners, we toasted Cow Shed Bar & Grill for their cocktails and At Gilly Gem’s serves up the area’s best breakfasts.
Then we moved onto fish and chips with customers and readers sending in their nominations and votes for their favourite plaice to get the perfect Friday night treat.
Voting for Wirral’s Best Beer Garden is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Fitness.

Twelve fantastic fish and chip suppers in Wirral made the shortlist with SelFish taking this year’s coveted crown making it back-to-back wins.
Boris Bektashev took over at SelFish on High Street at the end of March 2022 and the business was established 12 months earlier.
Boris, who is 36, said: “We provide our customers with the best there is to offer.
“Fresh cod and haddock is delivered to us daily from Scottish harbours and we make cooked to order pizzas, burgers and kebabs.
“New to our menu are ice creams, crepes and donuts as well as fish shaped waffles.”
He added: “The demand for a freshly cooked meal will never disappear and we enjoy being able to provide the community with great meals at excellent prices.
“We pride ourselves in using fresh products as much as possible and everything is made to order with a pinch of love.”
Boris was born in Bulgaria but moved to the UK in 2010 and lives in Huyton.
He wanted to open his own business to build a better future for his two boys.
Boris said: “I’ve been in this type of business ever since I arrived in England in 2010.
“I’ve owned another fish and chip shop in Huyton for nearly eight years but when SelFish came along, my wife and I decided to let the old shop go and started building something new.
“This was the best decision we ever made.”
SelFish serves fresh food every day and aims to support the local community at every opportunity.
Boris said: “We have given a free meal to all care home residents and we sponsor a junior football team.
“We are always donating vouchers for raffles and local fundraisers.”
SelFish serves the freshest cod and haddock sourced from Scottish harbours, which is delivered in the early hours of every morning.
But what do customers think about SelFish? Why did they think they deserved to take the title for the second time?
Customers say this is “the best around” and “no other place comes close to the service and food they provide”.
Boris said: “We serve everyone with a smile and do our best to provide everything for the perfect meal.
“We both love what we do.
“When we heard we’d made the shortlist again this year, we were extremely happy and excited to see whether we could win again.
“The feeling of winning is amazing.
“It’s well-deserved recognition for us and all our hard-working staff.
“We love our customers and we can’t thank them enough for the huge amount of support they continue to give us.”
