The jury for the retrial of Lucy Letby has been sworn in at Manchester Crown Court today (Tuesday, June 11).
A total of 14 members were selected for former Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal nurse's retrial.
Letby, 34, from Hereford, is accused of attempting to murder a baby girl at the hospital in February 2016, a charge she continues to deny. She was present in court as the jury selection process continued on Tuesday.
Trial judge Mr Justice James Goss told the jury panel - which currently consists of 12 jury members and two reserve jurors - that they are aware Letby was convicted of murdering a number of babies and attempting to murder a number of other babies.
The judge added the jury in the original trial was "unable to agree" on an attempted murder charge, and this case was for the new jury to determine.
He added it was "highly likely" jurors would have heard about the original trial, but told them they were to try the case only on the evidence that is heard before them during the retrial, and not to conduct any independent research.
"You and you alone have the responsibility of reaching a verdict in this case," he told the jurors.
The judge added Nicholas Johnson KC would deliver the prosecution opening on Wednesday, June 12, from 11am, followed by a defence statement from Benjamin Myers KC. After the opening, the trial will continue with 12 jurors.
The court also heard the retrial, expected to last "some", but "not a great number of weeks", will not be sitting on Friday, June 14.
