A WIRRAL kennels has issued a warning to people after a member of staff was taken to hospital after being attacked by a dog.

A member of staff from Friends of Birkenhead Kennels was rushed to hospital on Tuesday, June 4 after a “traumatic” experience with a dog brought into the kennels.

Now the kennels are trying to raise awareness about the risks they face when people bring dogs posing as strays.

A post on the Friends of Birkenhead Kennels Facebook page read: “When you bring a dog into us as a "stray" and it's your dog or you know the dog (which has happened on many occasions) this is a huge risk.

“Here's the reality. The dog tells us they know you by their behaviour as you walk away, then we are left with a dog we know nothing about, no history at all, not knowing if the dog is aggressive or not, not knowing what the triggers are, no vital information at all, not knowing even a name which is a massive risk to the staff left to handle the dog.

“You walk away and it's not your problem anymore, it's now our problem.

“Here's the fact, one of my staff was badly attacked by one of the dogs today and was rushed to hospital, this has been very traumatic, especially for the staff member involved and all the staff that were in today.

“Today has been a really tough day so please bear with us as we manage with less staff than usual at an already busy time with so many dogs in our care.

“We are sending best wishes and hoping the staff member has a speedy recovery.”
