THE family of a Wirral man who took his own life have completed a fundraising Three Peaks Challenge' in his memory.

Jodie, Darren, Baz, Deryn, Paul, Ste, Bunny, Marvin, Kieran, Jonny and driver Lawrence undertook the remarkable physical challenge in memory of their beloved Daniel Hanmer, who tragically passed away in 2020.

This group aimed to raise both awareness and funds for suicide prevention by completing the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge.

This involved climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales within a 24-hour period.

Their journey began on Saturday, May 25, at 5pm, starting with Ben Nevis, the tallest peak in Scotland. After enduring a demanding four-hour hike, they then embarked on a six-hour drive to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

In total, they covered 27 miles on foot with a cumulative ascent of 9,800 feet. The group completed this remarkable challenge in 23 hours.

It was all in aid of the Wirral-based Martin Gallier Project, thought to be the only suicide prevention, intervention, and post-vention charity in the North West of England.

It provides critical support to individuals in suicidal crisis and offers a compassionate space for those bereaved by suicide to find understanding and support. The charity also extends it’s support to the loved ones of those in crisis through training and peer support initiatives.

At the finishing point, sister of Daniel, Deryn Basnett said: "We lost Daniel to suicide in 2020, Losing someone to suicide is so complex.

"There are a stream of questions: why, how, when, where, what If? The most frequent question that comes to me is 'what could I have done to prevent this?'

"As a family we have come together since his death and learned things we wish we knew when Daniel was still here.

"One of the biggest things we have taken away from his death is that we all have a part to play in preventing suicide.

"Raising money for a charity so close to our hearts in his memory will ensure that other siblings, dads, mums, grandparents, uncles, cousins and friends won't have to endure what our family has".

Funding one life saving suicide intervention at The Martin Gallier Project costs £80. The team's goal was to raise £1,120, enough to fund interventions that could save 14 lives, equivalent to one life saved per team member. Impressively, they nearly tripled their initial target, raising over £3,000. This substantial amount will enable the charity to continue its vital work and potentially save many more lives in Daniel’s name.
