TWO people were rescued from the lift at Wirral railway station after it had an 'operational issue' this afternoon (Monday, May 27).

Fire crews were called to Hamilton Square station in Birkenhead at around 3pm. After speaking to staff, they were able to bring the lift up to floor level and free the two customers.

A Merseyrail spokesperson told the Globe: "One of the lifts at Hamilton Square had an operational issue at about 3.10pm today.

"Two customers were in the lift at the time, but staff were able to help fix the problem with the lift by 3.30pm".

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for a response.
