FREE creative writing and art courses are available to adult beginners in Wirral.

Literary arts organisation Read Now Write Now and Wirral Libraries are running free creative writing and arts courses for adult beginners as part of Wirral’s Borough of Culture activities, thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

Made in Wirral was previously delivered across Wirral in 2022 and 24 new writers saw their own stories published for the first time.

People who join the courses will take part in six week creative writing workshops led by Charlie Lea who will guide them on how to write a short story which can be included into a published anthology, displayed in local libraries and online as well as read out at a special storytelling event in late 2024.

They will also have the opportunity to attend arts workshops led by Nicola McGovern of Imagine Attic where they will create an illustration to go with their story inside the anthology.

Charlie Lea, creative director of Read Now Write Now, said: “We are delighted to have received funding to deliver this free project for adult beginners with Wirral Libraries again.

“Especially as Wirral is the Borough of Culture for the Liverpool City Region in 2024 and look forward to helping new writers gain the skills and experience to begin their own writing journey.

“Seeing their stories and illustrations contained within a published anthology which will be added to Wirral Libraries catalogue and displayed across Wirral will not only help develop writing skills but also boost confidence and wellbeing.”

The writing courses will take place:

Wallasey Central Library, Mondays 10.30am to 12pm from June 10 for six weeks

Online, Wednesdays 7pm to 8.30pm from June 12 for six weeks

Birkenhead Central Library, Thursdays 2.30pm to 4pm from June 13 for six weeks.
