MERSEYSIDE Police has charged a Wirral man with possession of a firearm following an incident on Walton Lane in Liverpool yesterday (Tuesday, May 21).

Christopher James, of Collin Road, Bidston, has also been charged with possession of ammunition and possession of a firearm when prohibited for life.

He was remanded into custody to appear at Sefton adult reman court today (Wednesday, May 22).

The gun that was recovered is being forensically examined.

Yesterday, Merseyside Police confirmed at just before 1pm a private hire taxi was stopped by armed police officers, who shot at the tyres.

It is understood that James was a passenger in the taxi at the time.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: “A tactical and safe stop of the vehicle was carried out on Walton Lane by trained armed police officers who shot out the tyres in a controlled manner.

“One man inside the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. We are in the very early stages of our enquiries but removing firearms from the streets of Merseyside and keeping people safe remains a priority for the force."
