A Wirral yacht club has elected a female Commodore for the first time in its 180-year history.

Carys Jarvis officially took on the role for Royal Mersey Yacht Club during its annual General Meeting on March 21.

The Royal Mersey Yacht Club's rich history, dating back to its Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1844, adds significance to its milestone. It is evident that the club values tradition while embracing progress and inclusivity.

After accepting the role Carys said: "I am looking forward to being your new Commodore and feel it is a great honour and privilege to have been voted into this role and especially as I am the first woman to take on this position.

"I am really looking forward to working closely with the General Committee and I am certain that, together, we can continue to take the club forward by continuing to thrive and build its reputation for future generations, and I will do my best to make this happen."

The Royal Mersey Yacht Club supports sailing on the river Mersey, based in Rock Ferry.

Its specialism is in sailing and racing keel boats, cruisers, and sports boats. The club runs an active programme of racing on the river from April to September, offering evening and weekend racing with a full Social Calendar of events.

The doors are forever open to newcomers to enable them to share the wonders of sailing, backed by a comprehensive training programme.

All levels of experience welcomed, from complete beginners to the more experienced. Places are still available on this year’s ‘Competent Crew course’ one which is proving very popular to the masses.
