A WIRRAL charity is using the “power of sport” to help tackle mental health.

Wirral Mind, an independent mental health charity established in 1967, launched their Motiv8! programme to improve mental health in Merseyside.

Motiv8! links physical health with mental health and uses sport and physical activity to support those with mental health problems to become more active.

A spokesperson for Wirral Mind told the Globe: “It’s proven that physical activity and exercise can have a positive impact on our mental health, in lots of different ways. But for some of us, getting active can be a struggle – including those of us who live with mental health problems. This is exactly why we introduced Motiv8! as part of our offer.

“Physical activity doesn’t have to mean running marathons or training every day at the gym. Motiv8! offers an exciting mix of classes and activities in a supportive, friendly and judgement free environment.”

The charity offers a weekly timetable of more than 15 physical activity sessions as well as taster sessions throughout the month ranging from box-fit, yoga, tai chi, table tennis, Football for the Mind, chair-fit, cheerleading and running.

Wirral Mind is supported by local organisations including Tranmere Rovers in the Community, Raw’n’Real, Core Movement Studio and Hybrid Fitness.

Motiv8! launched in February 2022, and sees around 550 participants at their physical activity sessions each month.

Participants have seen improvements to their fitness levels, self-esteem and sleep quality and many have found it helps to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

Motiv8! is free of charge and open to anyone aged 18+ living is Merseyside. If you would like to get involved, please contact 0151 512 2200, learning@wirralmind.org.uk or visit www.wirralmind.org.uk.
