A WIRRAL swimming club has become the top in Cheshire - after winning the county championships.
Wirral Metro Swimming Club attended the 2024 Cheshire County Swimming Championships at Macclesfield Leisure Centre which take place over three weekends.
The events are open only to swimmers, who meet top county qualifying times.
The club achieved 66 gold medals, 58 silver and 51 bronze with just 34 swimmers beating much larger clubs across Cheshire to win most points overall.
This makes them the first club on the Wirral to achieve this at a County competition.
They also were recognised as the most improved club in Cheshire at the event for the second time in a row.
Martin Brooks, coach for Wirral Metro, said: "It was great to see so many of our swimmers aged 10 upwards getting personal bests and reaching the finals.
"Many of our swimmers have been with this club and programme since they were age 9, showing what can be achieved with hard work and commitment, coupled with support and nurturing to help all the swimmers achieve their goals."
Top BAGCAT award went to 12-year-old Harper Aspinall, who set a new Cheshire record in her 1500m race, while 15-year-old Abbie Roscoe won overall top girl across the competition.
Abbie Roscoe also won 400m, 800m free Junior and Senior Champion, 1500 free Junior Champion, 100 fly Junior Champion, 200 fly Junior and Senior champion and 50 Breaststroke Junior Champion.
Other swimmers excelling in the competition included Petra Varga, who won 200m IM and 400m IM Junior and Senior Champion as well as 200 breaststroke Junior and Senior Champion.
Lily Horton brought back the 200m backstroke Junior and Senior Champion, while Luke Kavanagh won 800m and 1500m Junior Champion and Reagan Young picked up 200m breaststroke Junior and Senior Champion and 200m Fly Junior Champion.
Unlike other Liverpool City Region and Cheshire clubs competing at the championships, Wirral Metro remains unfunded by Wirral Council despite calls from the club to support local young talent.
The club is looking for sponsors who can support their young swimmers. To become a sponsor or donate contact Laura at members@wirralmetro.co.uk.
