TWO people are in hospital after an explosion at their Wirral home this morning (Saturday, December 2).
Emergency services were called to the burning two-storey mid-terrace property on Holt Road in Tranmere at around 7.30am.
At the height of the incident there were four fire engines and the aerial appliance in attendance.
The occupants, believed to be an elderly couple, were rescued by a neighbour and out of the property before firefighters arrived.
They were taken to hospital with burns.
The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
Representatives from the council are now at the scene to remove the debris pile.
Shocked residents living nearby recalled screaming down the phone to get the fire service to the scene following the blast.
One neighbour told the Globe: "I heard the blast, it was terrifying and really shook the place. Not the sort of thing you see everyday. Hopefully, the people taken to hospital are OK."
A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service statement said homes on either side of the affected premises have been evacuated and gas and electricity has been isolated.
It continued: "Fire crews have continued to hotspot the affected area at the property the incident originated. This has now concluded and fire fighting activities have ceased.
"The local authority are in attendance to remove the debris pile.
"An investigation is underway, however, it could take some time to establish cause.
"This is an ongoing incident please avoid the area.
"Any further updates to this incident will be shared here https://www.merseyfire.gov.uk/ if and when additional information becomes available."
