THE headteacher of a Wirral primary school has said it was a "great honour" to receive an award recognising their commitment to the environment.

Heswall Primary School, on Whitfield Lane, won the award for Outstanding Commitment to the Environment at the Educate Awards 2023 for their ongoing environmental project work.

The Educate Awards 2023, held at Liverpool Cathedral on Friday, November 17, gathered 700 attendees from schools across the Northwest to celebrate "excellence in education".

The Outstanding Commitment to the Environment category commends schools, academies and colleges who are making a considerable effort to be environmentally friendly and are actively working towards a sustainable future.

Headteacher, Jon Lawrenson, said: "It was a great honour to receive this award. Sustainability is at the very heart of Heswall Primary’s curriculum.

"Working with the Wirral community, our children have; made films, taken part in conservation project work and run large-scale events to raise the profile of the importance of protecting our local and global environment.

"We are particularly proud of our #heswalloceanblue - take the plastic pledge project,  which has now run for five years.

"This project has instilled in our pupils the need to encourage everyone to think more carefully about their use of single use plastic.

"Alongside other local Wirral primary schools, the children have made some really thought  provoking environmental films which can be found on our school website - we would love people to share these films across the educational community.

"This award has given us a real drive to ensure that Heswall Primary continues its eco journey for many years to come."
