WIRRAL Mencap has celebrated its 60th birthday by hosting a party in memory of a former committee member.

To celebrate their anniversary, Wirral Mencap Members’ Committee wanted to organise something special to celebrate and to raise funds for Wirral Mencap.

Sadly, before the celebrations were finalised, committee member and founder, David Taylor, passed away.

On Friday, October 20, at Our Lady’s Parish Centre Birkenhead, Wirral Mencap’s Members’ Committee threw a party in memory of David.

Afterwards Lyndsay, one of Dave’s friends on the Committee, said: "I sang in memory of Dave because I knew he liked music and I chose a couple of songs from the 60s that I thought he liked.

"I thought it would be a nice tribute to him. It was a great night and a fitting tribute to a long-standing member of Wirral Mencap’s members’ committee.

"I think he would have enjoyed the night himself."

Ken, another committee member who was friends with Dave from when they were teenagers said: "I’ve known David Taylor a long time and he’s been a great friend.  I enjoyed the party.  I had lots of sandwiches and drinks.  Just a shame I didn’t win on the raffle.

"There were some great prizes."

Sharon Nicholson, CEO for Wirral Mencap added: "Dave was a very active fundraiser for Wirral Mencap for many years.

"He volunteered at lots of community events, raised money from several Tea Party events and he even organised a brilliant Barn Dance night one year.

"He was always great at persuading people to donate raffle and tombola prizes which always went down well.

"Dave was a larger-than-life character at Wirral Mencap, known for his sense of humour and generosity.

"He has been missed but I think this party in his memory is a fitting way to show how much he was appreciated by everyone at Wirral Mencap."
