MORE than 100 self-storage containers will be sited on land in Bromborough if plans for a change of use on the site are approved.

If given the go ahead, it would allow up to 139 of the containers to be located on the Emerald Aggregates Ltd site on Commercial Road.

The containers will all be at ground level and will not be stacked on top of one another. There will be three types of storage container at the site – 10ft, 20ft, and 20ft 'tunnel' containers.

Members of the public will be able to rent containers for self-storage. The opening hours of the business are proposed to be 7am to 11pm.

A new access to the site from Riverbank Road will also be provided.

According to planning documents prepared by Pegasus Group on behalf of the applicant Shield Self Storage LTD, the brownfield site is currently vacant, but previously contained various industrial buildings/uses.

A statement in the report read: "Given the planning history of the site, it is considered that the most recent use of the site was for the recycling of aggregates for use by the highway and utilities sector.

“As temporary structures, the shipping containers themselves do not require planning permission, therefore the most pertinent issue is whether the proposed change in use class of the land is acceptable in planning policy terms.

“The new proposed access will benefit from appropriate visibility and will not result in any highway safety concerns.

“The proposed development presents a sustainable intensification of the industrial use of the site, within a designated industrial area.

“Whilst the design of the proposal is wholly industrial in nature, such design should be considered in keeping with the industrial character of the immediate locality.

“The proposal will bring a vacant, previously developed, urban brownfield site back into productive use ensuring the best use of land.

"It is appropriate for its location and will bring environmental, social and economic benefits, and can therefore be considered a sustainable development.

“The proposal is in accordance with national and local policy and should therefore be approved without delay."
