BIRKENHEAD will lose its Wilko shop today (Sunday, October 8) as the last remaining stores shut across the country.
Wilko's last stores, including Birkenhead's shop at The Europa Centre, will close today following the retailer’s administration.
The hardware and furnishings retailer tumbled into administration in August after it came under pressure from weak consumer spending and debts to suppliers.
However, the Wilko brand will not disappear entirely from the UK high street after The Range agreed to buy Wilko’s brand, website and intellectual property, with plans to sell the acquired brand in its stores.
Liscard's Wilko store, in the Cherry Tree Shopping Centre, closed its doors after 24 years last week (Thursday, September 28).
On the closure, staff member Mark Warren who had been an employee since opening day in 1999, said: "We're like family here so we've supported each other to the very end."
Several Wilko stores are set to re-open as Poundland outlets after being bought out of administration by the value retailer.
Poundland owner Pepco agreed last month to buy up to 71 Wilko stores from administrator PwC following the collapse of the high street chain.
