Next on the menu was the search for Wirral’s Best Pub or Bar and The Scrap Yard took the latest Best of 2023 crown.
Claire and Gary bought The Scrap Yard on Wallasey Road, which had been established for four years, exactly 12 months ago.
It’s an independent, family-run business with “an amazing team”, headed by manager Christopher Lindon, who Claire calls her ‘Scrappy Doos”.
Claire, who lives in New Brighton, said: “In the past year, I have put blood, sweat and tears into the place and really turned it round.
“We have such an amazing bunch of staff who have become part of the family, just like every customer that comes into The Scrapyard – we’re one big family.
“We were one of the first craft beer bards in Wirral and currently have 24 types of craft beer, cider and lager on tap.
“We also have some great cocktails and a wide selection of wines and spirits.
“As a coffee shop during the day, we offer a huge variety of hot drinks and delicious cakes along with light bites.
“We serve toast, teacakes and crumpets and we also do the best cheese on toast around!”
The Scrap Yard is open seven days a week, 9am until 11pm, and is dog friendly.
There’s a garden that sits around 40 people and they provide exclusive hire of the outside space free of charge.
Claire said: “Outside has a cover and heaters so it’s lovely and cosy on a winter’s night and a great place to enjoy a drink in the summer sunshine.
“We hold regular charity fundraisers and have visits from the Easter bunny and Santa, where I dress up as an Easter chick and a festive elf – I love to get involved!”
But what do the customers think of The Scrap Yard? Why did they think the venue should win our latest Best of 2023 award?
One nomination said: “This is a lovely place with great beers and a really great bunch of people.”
Claire said: “The Scrap Yard is a warm and welcoming place - you come in as a customer and leave as a friend.
“We have so many regular clients that just love the atmosphere, the vibe and the feel of the place.
“My staff are absolutely one in a million and this is why I am absolutely over the moon win this award.
“This is for them - for all their hard work.
“They show loyalty and give so much support to me and the business.
“It’s a social hub for everyone and we have live music on Friday nights and alternate Saturdays.
“Our open mic night lets local musicians get up and entertain people on the last Sunday of each month, and our quiz night – two Mondays each month – is great fun.”
Claire has had an emotional week, reading all the comments and votes for The Scrap Yard after they were shortlisted for Wirral’s Best Pub 2023.
She said: “Reading all the beautiful comments from customers and regulars has been very emotional – definitely happy tears.
“I want to thank everyone for their love and support and for every single vote – it’s totally overwhelming.”
Claire added: “The Scrap Yard isn’t a job but a hobby – it’s my love, my passion and I love everything about it.
“It’s a gem of a place with something for everyone.”
