A DAMNING report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has revealed "serious concerns" about the safety at a Wallasey nursing home.
Sandrock Nursing Home, on Sandrock Road, was inspected on May 25, May 31 and most recently on June 9.
The home provides accommodation for up to 28 people who require nursing or personal care. The home is in one adapted building. At the time of the inspection, 15 people lived there.
CQC gave Sandrock, run by Prasur Investments Limited, an overall 'inadequate' rating, after the categories 'safety' and 'well-led' were deemed 'inadequate'.
The effectiveness, care and response of the service were all deemed 'good'.
What did the report say?
The report stated: "During this inspection, although the provider had made improvements to the concerns identified previously, there continues to be a breach of the regulations.
"With the provider's poor regulatory history and repeated concerns from the past three inspections, we could not be assured that the quality of the service would improve in the areas identified at this inspection."
It also revealed that the "provider neglected the premises people lived in placing them at risk of abuse".
In terms of the safety of the service, the CQC raised "serious concerns with the safety and condition of both the inside and outside of the premises".
The report continued to say that "the garden area presented multiple health and safety hazards to both people and staff" as there were "blocked drains, old mattresses, gas cannisters, wooden pallets and garden materials piled up".
Concerns were also raised about the gutters which were "blocked with plant materials" and in the eves of the roof "several pigeons had made nests".
The carpets in two of the bedrooms "had a malodorous smell that was overpowering, and despite being cleaned as per the cleaning records, the carpets were not fit for purpose".
Placed in special measures
The home is now in special measures which means CQC will keep the service under review and, if they do not propose to cancel the provider's registration, they will re-inspect within six months to check for significant improvements.
