VOLUNTEERS at Flaybrick Memorial Gardens have been left "saddened" after an act of vandalism took place.
On Monday (August 21) volunteers from Friends of Flaybrick confirmed that there had been an "attack" on the chapels at Flaybrick Memorial Gardens in Birkenhead.
Friends of Flaybrick have a regular group of volunteers who turn out to help maintain the grounds at Flaybrick.
The team does anything from ground clearance and path laying to weed and plant control around the memorials.
In a social media post, the volunteers explained that the lock and chain at the gardens had been "cut off with bolt croppers" and the "large red poppies and silhouetted soldiers" had been vandalised with silver paint.
There was also a "considerable number" of drink cans and wine bottles left inside the chapels.
They also confirmed that Wirral Council took "prompt action" to "secure the site and clear the mess up".
The post continued: "The spray paint is the same as was used previously to deface some of our other work around Flaybrick so the style of the attacks is becoming very familiar.
"We are extremely grateful to the council for the prompt action being taken to secure the site and clear this mess up and will be working closely with them to find a way to identify whoever is responsible for this disgraceful act of disrespect for those who are resting here.
"Our many supporters can rest assured that the work we do at Flaybrick will not stop just because of the behaviour of whoever is responsible.
"The Friends and volunteers are going nowhere."
Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: "I condemn wholeheartedly these disgusting acts of vandalism at Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.
"It is not merely disrespectful, it shows contempt for the sacrifices and service of all those commemorated by the memorials and a total disregard for the hard work of staff and volunteers who help maintain this historic site so well."
