LUCY Letby will spend the rest of her life in jail for her “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign” of murder and attempted murder of babies at the hospital where she worked.
The most prolific child serial killer in modern British history was told by judge Mr Justice Goss there was a “malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions” for which “you have no remorse”.
The 33-year-old was convicted by a jury of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more while working in the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016.
The judge handed her a whole-life order at Manchester Crown Court on Monday, making her only the fourth woman in UK history to be told she will never be released from prison.
During the trial the court heard that two of Letby's victims had been born in Wirral's Arrowe Park Hospital.
In September 2015 she made two attempts to kill the baby known as 'Child G'. She was a very premature baby who was born in Arrowe Park Hospital on May 31 at only 23 weeks and six days’ gestation. She was stable and was transferred to the Countess of Chester, where the general trend of improvement continued.
On September 7, her 100th day of life, nurses had planned a small celebration, but on the nightshift of September 6, Letby deliberately injected milk and air into Child G’s stomach down the naso-gastric tube shortly after her designated nurse had fed her, causing her to projectile vomit. Letby made a further attempt to kill Child G on September 21 by over-feeding her, causing her to projectile vomit again and stop breathing and her saturations to drop. Child G suffered a severe and profound injury to her brain from which she will not recover and the court heard how she now requires constant nursing care and attention and will require surgery and support throughout her life.
In a statement read to the court, the girl’s father said the start of her life was a “bumpy road” because she was so premature.
He said: “Every day I would sit there and pray. I would pray for God to save her. He did. He saved her, but the Devil found her."
Just over a month later, on October 23, Letby murdered 'Child I'. She had been born at Arrowe Park Hospital on August 7 and had been at the Countess of Chester from August 18. Letby repeatedly injected air into Child I's stomach and bowel and on the night of October 22-23, she suffered her final collapse, crying out in severe pain as a result of air embolus after Letby injected air into her venous system.
Police believe Letby may have harmed dozens more infants at the Countess of Chester and Liverpool women’s hospital where she also worked.
Experts have been asked by Cheshire constabulary to examine the medical records of more than 4,000 babies born at both hospitals between 2012 and 2016.
