A formal bid to bring banking services back to a Wirral town has been submitted by local councillors. 

If accepted, Moreton would see a new 'banking hub' to serve local residents and businesses.

So far, six hubs have opened nationwide, with the most recent being opened by consumer champion Martin Lewis.

Banking hubs are shared spaces on the high street that enable customers of most of the main banks to deposit and withdraw cash, as well as other banking tasks.

Hubs also have private spaces where customers can speak to someone from their own bank about complex issues and these work on a rota, so staff from different banks are available on different days.

Councillor Vida Wilson said: "The most recent retail study identified more than 140 retail units in Moreton - many of these shops and small businesses need a local banking service.

"Over the last few years, Moreton has seen Santander, Lloyds, Barclays, Natwest and HSBC all withdraw from the town and residents, and businesses, have been badly affected.

"Following discussions with Link, the organisers of the banking hubs, we have today submitted a bid for Moreton to be assessed for the next tranche of hubs that will be established."

Vida, along with councillors Colin Baldwin and Gary Bennett, are also urging residents and businesses to submit their views as to why Moreton needs banking services via this link
