WHEN it comes to breakfast, you can’t go wrong with a full English – fried eggs, sausages and bacon with hash browns, beans and toast.
How about an award-winning one from Twenty Sixteen – officially Wirral’s Best for Breakfast 2023!
And you might even rub shoulders with some celebrities while you eat.
Each week, we will be searching for the best Wirral has to offer in different categories.
The Hair, Beauty and Nail Lounge took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in Wirral – and Pies4U is officially Best for Pies with Ebony J Nails and Beauty being crowned Best for Nails, The Fox and Hounds is Best for Roast Dinner and Shaker Shaker was announced as Best for Cocktails.
Voting for Wirral’s Best for Fitness is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Fish and Chips.
Next up was breakfast and Twenty Sixteen beat off some tough competition to take the title.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Helen and Chris Jones, Twenty Sixteen Coffee and Kitchen opened its doors on Village Road in Oxton in October last year.
The couple have clearly made a good first impression in the village offering home cooked meals that are both satisfying and delicious.
Helen said: “We’re a family-run café in the heart of beautiful Oxton village.
“We have lived in Oxton since 2014 and when the opportunity arose to invest in our community we were beyond delighted.
“We’re family-friendly and little guests have their own menu to choose from and we have toys for them to play with as well as activity packs to keep little minds occupied.
“We’re dog-friendly too and well behaved four-legged friends can enjoy treats from our doggie treats jar.”
Twenty Sixteen is named after the year of Helen and Chris’ daughter Isla’s birth and there is a warm and friendly feel to the place, welcoming customers old and new.
They serve an all-day menu of breakfasts, brunches, lunches and main meals alongside a large selection of hot and cold drinks.
So, what do customers think of Twenty Sixteen? Why did they think the venue deserved to win our latest title?
Recommendations for this venue said the “menu is amazing” and “it’s well priced and great portions”.
They added: “I can’t recommend this place enough and I tell everyone about it!”
The coffee shop is also proving to be a hit with celebrity customers as Olympic Gold Medallist Sam Quek, football legend John Barnes and comedian Johnny Vegas have all dined here over the past few months.
Helen, who is 37, said: “We are committed to sourcing excellent quality products and our food is all made fresh in house each day.
“We also offer a great selection of homemade cakes and bakes from Oxton’s own The Cookery Nook and all our food is available to eat in or take away.
“We cater for dietary requirements with a wide range of vegetarian and gluten-free alternatives and we also have a separate vegan menu.”
Helen met Chris while she was waitressing after graduating from university and he was a head chef, having been classically trained and spent time in the kitchens of Marco Pierre White and Jean-Christophe Novelli.
Helen said: “Chris has always wanted to open his own place and soon after we got together in 2009, this became my dream as well.
“During lockdown, Chris spent a lot more time at home and we had more time as a family but when he had to return to the unsociable chef shifts – 10am until 11pm – he realised he needed more of a work-life balance.
“So, we took the idea more seriously and started making plans to open our own place.
“We searched for a long time for the right location and venue and when the opportunity came up to open our new business in our own village, we couldn’t believe our luck.
“We love Oxton and we were so happy to be able to invest in our village.
“The support we have received from our local community has been unbelievable and we’re so proud to be a part of it.”
Helen added: “Our staff members are brilliant – they were each chosen for their personality as much as their experience.
“We wanted a fun, friendly and passionate team who would become one big Twenty Sixteen family, and we are so grateful to each of them for their hard work and dedication.
“We wanted to open somewhere with personality.
“The aim was to provide a comfortable, cosy, casual surroundings where there is something for all the family.
“We wanted to create a hub in the community where people can meet for a coffee and a cake, or a full meal and where they can stay a while and relax.
“We have so many regular customers, which is such a massive compliment.
“Our amazing front of house team, led by our fabulous manager Claire, have built great relationships with our returning customers, which is lovely to see.”
With hundreds of fantastic eateries all over Wirral, Twenty Sixteen faced some tough opposition when it came to claiming the Best for Breakfast title.
Helen said: “It was a huge compliment to be shortlisted especially as we’re only seven months old, but to win is just wonderful.
“We’d like to thank all our lovely customers who voted for us – their support means so much to us.”
Twenty Sixteen has just started opening the venue for private dining and functions during the evenings and can provide sit down meals or grazing tables.
