TWO people were rescued after being cut off by the flooding tide near Leasowe Lighthouse yesterday (Wednesday, May 24).
Hoylake RNLI hovercraft was requested to launch by HM Coastguard at 12.42pm to reports of two people cut off by the tide near Leasowe Lighthouse.
The RNLI hovercraft Hurley Spirit and her volunteer crew launched and headed to the casualties’ reported location. Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team had also been tasked.
The hovercraft soon arrived and found the two casualties up to their ankles in rising water. Their safe route ashore had been cut off by the tide.
Both casualties were brought on board the hovercraft and after a check by the crew to ensure they needed no medical assistance, both were flown to the nearby sea wall and passed safely to Wirral Coastguard.
'We urged everyone to stay safe and respect the water'
Hoylake RNLI hovercraft commander and mechanic Harry Jones said: "It's quite common for people out walking to find themselves cut off unexpectedly so it’s lucky the alarm was raised in good time, otherwise the casualties may have found themselves in a much more dangerous situation.
"As more people head to the coast over the half-term and Bank Holiday break ahead, we urge everyone to stay safe and respect the water. If you're heading out across the beach, always check the weather forecast, tide times and local safety signage, keep an eye on your surroundings, and know your route to safety. Always carry a means of calling for help and if you get into difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
