WHEN you’ve been doing the same job for nearly 30 years and you still enjoy every minute of every day at work you know you’re onto a winner.
Best friends Deborah Evans and Karen Russell opened The Hair, Nail and Beauty Lounge in November 1993 on Birkenhead Market and they say that even after three decades “not a day goes by where we don’t have a laugh together”.
There will be extra celebrations this weekend as the popular salon has been crowned Wirral’s Best for Hair 2023.
The Hair, Nail and Beauty Lounge is the first winner in our Best of 2023 competition, where each week we search for the best Wirral has to offer in different categories.
We started with Best for Hair and we were inundated with nominations for salons all over Wirral with clients and customers telling us who they thought should make the final shortlist.
Voting for Wirral’s Best for Pies is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Nails.
Ten top salons in Wirral made the shortlist for Best for Hair with The Hair, Beauty and Nail Lounge in Birkenhead taking the coveted crown.
There were hundreds of nominations and votes from loyal clients and customers who wanted to support Deborah and Karen, whose salon is now on St Werburgh’s Square on Grange Precinct in Birkenhead.
One nomination stood out from the rest.
The customer wanted to thank the girls in the salon for their love and support when she lost her husband.
She said: “They cared for me and looked after me and made me look better than I felt inside.”
Debbie travels from north Wales every day and Karen journeys in from Chester as they “enjoy the large personalities and warmth Birkenhead provides”.
The talented twosome offer a variety of modern hair, beauty and nail services in the salon and say “the fun and madness is free”!
Karen said: “Deborah and I have been best friends for so long and in 1993 we decided to do something together.
“It’s been one hell of a journey!
“We have successfully and proudly run this salon for nearly 30 years and not a day goes by where we don’t all laugh together.
“It’s such a fun industry to be part of - you get to make someone feel better about themselves in a couple of hours.
“We get to know our clients and will always offer and friendly ear, advice and support while they’re with us.”
Deborah added: “It’s not your usual salon – quiet and calm would not be words used to describe us!
“Many of our clients say it’s a mad house and they enjoy it as much as we do.
“We felt so incredibly humbled that they nominated our salon to make the shortlist for Best for Hair in Wirral and we’re amazed and elated to actually win.
“We’re both nearly 60 and hardly know how to use social media so it means the world that our clients supported us and voted for us to win.”
She added: “Our clients are the reason we get up every morning and why we look forward to going to work.
“We truly value each and every one.”
