A BRIDGE in Neston, which forms part of the Wirral Way, will be removed in the next two weeks after an inspection showed it was "beyond practical repair".

Windle Hill Bridge on Cuckoo Lane in Neston was recently closed by Cheshire West and Chester Council due to safety concerns after a recent inspection had taken place.

On March 31, the Council confirmed that the bridge would initially be secured by temporarily propping and bracing the parapets, which was expected to happen within two weeks.

A specific date for the completion of repairs for the bridge to be fully reopened was going to be confirmed after a further discussion with engineers.

The bridge has been closed since then with a minor diversion around it to allow users to access the full length of the Wirral Way.

Today (April 19) the Council have confirmed that to allow access under the bridge to the nearby fields, the bridge will be taken down over the next two weeks, to allow safe passage underneath for users needing to access their land.

A spokesperson for Cheshire West and Chester Council said: "The Council is committed to a new bridge being installed, unfortunately, timescales for this are not known at this stage, as it will need to be designed and procured.

"The alternative access will remain in place for users of the Wirral Way until the new bridge is installed, if using this alternative access please be vigilant when crossing and be aware of farm vehicles."
