HUNDREDS of residents are expected to line the streets of Birkenhead in memory of Paul O’Grady.
The Birkenhead-born entertainer died suddenly last month aged 67 at his home in the village of Aldington in Kent. It was revealed recently that he died of sudden cardiac arrhythmia.
It was confirmed by Paul’s husband, Andre Portasio, that a private funeral would be held in Kent on Thursday, April 20.
The tragic news was met with outpourings of support and love from people who shared their heartbreak over the loss of the much-loved TV presenter.
O’Grady fan Janine Ferguson, who lived in Birkenhead until she was 13-years-old, has organised a community event that will take place on the day of the funeral and will see residents line the streets of Birkenhead to pay their respects and celebrate the celebrity's life.
Janine told the Globe: “I’m a great lover of Paul O’Grady and I was absolutely traumatised when I heard that he had passed.
“It really upset me, I think it did with everyone. It was devastating to hear because he was so loved by everyone.”
Janine, who lives in North Wales, has organised an event that will see people lining the streets of Grange Road and Woodchurch Road in Birkenhead from 2pm on Thursday, April 20.
She said: “The plan is for people to line the streets with their families and bring their dogs as a sign of respect. I’ve asked for all local rescue dogs and cats' homes to attend as well so we can collect donations from everyone there.”
As well as lining the streets, Janine is encouraging people to bring condolence books which will be collected and sent to Battersea Dogs Home to be delivered to Paul's family.
Janine added: “It only started off as a small idea but it has gone absolutely mad. I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction and the feedback to it.
“Birkenhead was Paul’s home so I hope we can give it our very best to make his memory an extremely special day.”
The event will take place on Grange Road and Woodchurch Road and will start a 2pm until 4pm.
