A NESTON plumber has been recognised for his work in the community, becoming a finalist in the SGS Engineering Local Hero Awards 2023.

Chris Griffiths, 39, is the owner of Unique Heating and Bathrooms.

Amid the cost-of-living crisis, Chris helped to try to ensure that no elderly people were left without heating by offering half-price work for any OAPs and offering free fixes for any small jobs.

After receiving three anonymous nominations, Chris found out that he was one of the five nominees to become finalists in the SGS Engineering Local Hero Awards 2023.

Speaking to the Globe about receiving the news he said: "They tried to call me and I missed the call so I got an email and I was shocked really.

"It's a national competition as well which was quite surprising.

"I just want to thank whoever did nominate me. I still do help people all of the time. My apprentice who works with me always has a go saying I never charge anyone."

The awards were designed to reward tradespeople who go above and beyond for their local community.

In its first year, Graham Nash won the award for his work fixing the damage done by cowboy builders, free of charge.

The competition for 2023 launched earlier this year and people across the country were encouraged to nominate builders, plumbers, electricians, joiners, plasterers, and other well-deserving tradespeople who have been serving their community with good deeds.

If Chris wins, he will receive £1,000 and has said he will donate it to a local charity.

"Basically if I do win I'm just going to donate it to a Neston charity anyway", Chris said.

Dave Gordon, General Manager at SGS Engineering, said: "The Local Hero Awards is a great way for us to highlight the amazing generosity of tradespeople up and down the country, and we are delighted to announce our set of finalists.

"It is now up to the public to determine who wins this fantastic cash prize. Each finalist well deserves their nomination, and we’re excited to see who will take the crown."
