RESIDENTS in Willaston have voiced concerns about their "awful" under-maintained road.

The Knowe, located off the popular Hooton Road, has been an ongoing issue for residents because of its numerous potholes and its uneven surface.

A resident took to social media confirming that five years ago they sent a letter to the Highways Engineer at Cheshire West and Chester Council, signed by 17 residents of The Knowe complaining about the appalling state of the road.

The Globe spoke to two residents of The Knowe, who wished to remain anonymous, about the condition of the road.

One said: "We moved here in 2020 and it was bad then. It's been bad for years.

"So many people have complained, and yes people may come out to have a look at it, but nothing is ever done.

"I just think it's crazy the state that it's in, people are complaining and it's just being dismissed."

They also said the houses along The Knowe are Council Tax Band F, meaning they pay £260 a month.

"You'd think that we'd have some sort of decent road to drive our car. It's just awful", they said.

"My mum works as an estate agent and there's a couple of houses on the market and she said people who come to view the houses always comment about the state of the road."

The residents went on to explain that road conditions are affecting the daily tasks they carry out.

One said: "I ride a bike and I have to push it to the top of the road before I get on it and that's not me being dramatic it's so I don't fall off it and knacker my wheels."

Another added: "I've just had a baby and it's a nightmare driving on that road. You have to drive so slowly to make sure their head is supported.

"What needs to happen to fix the road? It's as if an accident needs to happen before something is done, and it should never have to get to that point."

Cllr Myles Hogg continues to try to fix The Knowe

Councillor for Willaston, Cllr Myles Hogg told the Globe: "I have been reminding officials for years now abut The Knowe. I ask them five times a year about it.

"I am told it is on a list but there are insufficient funds available. In my opinion, the road doesn't just need to be fixed now, it needs a full refurbishment."

'The road isn’t included in the major resurfacing programme'

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson said: "Our Council has to ensure that all the work we undertake to address road defects, with the limited funding available, are commissioned in a very focused way to ensure we use those funds appropriately, fairly and safely.

"Each year we must make difficult decisions on which roads we commit expenditure to. This is based primarily on a safety basis but also takes account of usage, speed of vehicles and safety of the user.

"The Council carried out a safety inspection of The Knowe last month, unfortunately, the road isn’t included in the major resurfacing programme for this year, however, we will consider other surface treatments, if funding allows in the future.

"Regular safety inspections will continue to take place and any defects highlighted during these inspections will be prioritised and repaired where required. We do understand the impact that poor road conditions have and we take this very seriously. "
