NEW public toilets are set to open at Wirral park later this year, following a campaign by councillors and community groups.
Vale Park in Wallasey had well-used toilets until Storm Arwen damaged the building beyond repair in 2021.
The area was, subsequently, left without any toilets until ward councillors stepped in called for temporary facilities to be put in place while a longer-term solution was found.
Now, council officers have agreed to new, permanent loos.
New Brighton Labour Cllr Sue Powell-Wilde said: "I'm delighted that we are now getting new toilets built in Vale Park, and we are informed that they will be in place in the coming months.
"People often plan their journeys and days out around the access to toilets, especially people with disabilities and families with young children, and finding toilets that are suitable for their needs.
"It also means people are given greater access to community. Clean, safe and accessible toilets make communities more liveable.
"It is not often you hear of local authorities building public toilets, and it is thanks to our community groups' support, and the work undertaking by our council officers in making this happen."
The site is a favourite for families, with its mini fairy village, troll tree, memory garden, tooth fairy house, fairy clothes line, and open space for events.
Fellow Labour ward councillor Paul Martin, a dad of four young children, said: "I’m pleased that council officers have listened to the concerns raised about toilet provision in Vale Park.
"Last summer saw the return of a number of events at the Park which were really well attended by families from across the borough.
"As a dad of young children, I'm all too aware that kids are not always the most patient when nature calls.
"Permanent toilet provision will enable families to enjoy the park and its events without fear of being caught short. I'm looking forward to another fun-filled summer in this wonderful park."
Labour councillor and lifeboatman Tony Jones, who has campaigned for the new facilities, said: "Vale Park is and always has been one of the jewels in Wallasey's crown, it has bought unlimited pleasure to countless generations of Wallasey residents and continues to do so.
"It's both valued and loved and in keeping with its surrounding area is unique in its offer and location.
"Anything we can do to preserve and enhance this unique green space we have a collective obligation to do so."
