A BEBINGTON restaurant owner will be driving a huge van of donations to London tomorrow (Thursday, February 9) to be sent to Turkey.

Mustafa Ciftci owns Broadway Steak and Wine. He moved to Wirral 16 years ago, and has many family and friends in Turkey.

Thousands of people have died in Turkey and Syria after a huge 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused widespread destruction.

Today (February 8) it has been confirmed that the death toll from the earthquake has climbed past 9,400, making it the deadliest seismic event in more than a decade.

Mustafa, along with other members of the Turkish community in Wirral, are collecting donations to send to the people in Turkey following the devastating event.

He told the Globe that currently, he has a sister-in-law and some very close family friends stuck under buildings.

"There are so many people I know losing their mothers, brothers, and friends so we all just want to help", he said.

Mustafa and a friend will be driving to London at 8am tomorrow (February 9) with a van they have hired, filled with donations.

He is looking for more people to donate torches, baby nappies, women's hygiene products, tents and sleeping bags.

"This is important. I don't want to think about my restaurant at this time, I just want to help," Mustafa explained.

"They all need our help. There are so many people dying. Everyone is doing what they can."

The four collections points are:

  • Mekan Lounge, Birkenhead
  • Turkish BBQ, Bromborough
  • Mediterranean Kitchen, Bebington
