Here 34-year-old Rebecca Smith, who owns The Colour Bar, tells us about opening her first salon when she was 18 and the big plans she has for 2023.

I opened the salon 15 years ago in 2008.

I didn’t grow up in this area but have lived here for more than five years.
Tell me a bit about your salon/business. What do you do? What services do you provide?
At The Colour Bar, we offer all colouring services from drastic colour changes and colour corrections to full head bleaching, vivid colours and bespoke balayage, to simple root tints and traditional foils as well as cuts, blow dries and smoothing keratin treatments.
What’s your hair and beauty background?
I did my work experience in a salon during high school then went on to an NVQ apprenticeship after leaving school and I’ve since done a make-up course and a beauty course.
Why this type of business?
I love that every day in the salon is different - different people, different challenges - and there’s always something new in the hair and beauty industry - a new product of a new service. It’s nice to see new faces come into the salon and transform people’s hair but it’s also lovely to see our regular clients as we have a little salon community, which feels like a second family.
How did the Covid-19 pandemic affect your business?
It’s still affecting us now unfortunately. I think it will take a long time for most places to get back to how things were before Covid.
What makes your business different to others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?
There are so many amazing hairstylists and salons that customers are spoilt for choice. My hairdressers always have ongoing training and we keep up to date with the latest trends, services and products and we try to offer different packages to suit all budgets.
Why do loyal clients return to your business?
We try our best to look after our clients and give them the best experience possible when they visit the salon. We always go the extra mile and we appreciate that without our customers we wouldn’t have such a successful business. We will always try to give the client what they want but will be honest about what can be achieved.
What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your salon?
I opened Colour Bar 2 in Oxton four years ago but had to close the salon in December last year. I’m in the process of reopening the premises with a slightly different business plan – it will be known as Unite and will provide rented chairs for self employed stylists. I’ll also host education and training workshops there. Balayage hairstylist Lee Quinn from Ireland will be hosting a class in May.
