DOZENS of floral tributes have been left outside the shop of a man who lost his life in a helicopter crash, along with his wife, on Monday (January, 2).

Ron and Diane Hughes, 65 and 57, from Neston, died after two helicopters crashed on the Gold Coast, Australia.

The couple were killed alongside the pilot and another passenger – a 36-year-old woman from Glenmore Park, New South Wales – when their helicopter collided with another at around 2pm local time – 4am GMT – in Main Beach.

Following the news, Ron's shop, Concept Interiors, on Neston High Street, has been closed with the sign "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the shop is closed until further notice" stuck on the shutters.

In a statement to media, Ron's daughter, Jane Manns said: "Our family is heartbroken and we are still trying to contact friends and family to let them know.

"Please respect our privacy at this devastating time."

One floral tribute left outside the shop read: "RIP Ron you will never be forgotten."

Another said: "Thinking of you at this very sad time."

Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Louise Gittins, said: "This is devastating news and my thoughts are with Ron and Diane’s family and friends at this sad time.

"Ron and Diane played an important part in our community and will be sorely missed."

The force said “initial investigations” indicate the collision occurred when one helicopter was taking off and the other was landing.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of two British nationals who died in Australia and are in contact with the local authorities.”
