WHAT could be better on a chilly winter’s day than a get together to enjoy some great stories, a few laughs, a spooky tale or two and maybe even a bit of a sing-song?
That’s exactly what’s on offer from the Wirral Wonderers, a new group formed by local legend John Gorman and storyteller Sue Povall, together with some of their friends.
The Wirral Wonderers meet once a month at Birkenhead’s Williamson Art Gallery. Last month’s session featured some great traditional tales, Japanese ghost stories, insights into the early career of The Beatles, John Gorman’s classic poem about Ken Dodd’s Dad’s Dog plus some extraordinary kiss and tell revelations about members of the royal family (which may or may not have been entirely true)! The group will be holding their next performance at the Williamson on Saturday, December 17.
Sue has lived in England, Africa, Belgium, America and Australia and has been fascinated for years by folk tales, fairy tales and traditional tales from different cultures. Now as well as performing stories for both adults and children at festivals and other events, she regularly runs workshops to teach the skills of storytelling to others.
John is of course known to millions as a member of the chart topping comedy and music group Scaffold who recently celebrated 60 years since their first performance with two hugely successful shows at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre. He also of course provided further hilarity as part of the classic Saturday morning kids’ show Tiswas with Chris Tarrant, Sally James and Lenny Henry.
The Wirral Wonderers bill in December will also feature music from local singer/songwriter Paul Rowlands, festive tales from Mary Rickett and further stories of the fab four on Merseyside from Beatles’ Liverpool author, Mike Haskins.
Wirral Wonderers’ performances last two hours and entrance is just £5 with all proceeds going to Claire House Children’s Hospice. You can even indulge yourself with a hot drink and a delicious snack from the gallery cafe while you’re there.
So come along to the Williamson Art Gallery, Slatey Road, Birkenhead at 2 pm on December 17 for a fantastic afternoon of stories and wonder!
