CRISTIANO Ronaldo has been suspended for two matches, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct following an incident involving a Wirral teenager.
The forward admitted that his conduct after the final whistle of the Premier League game between Manchester United FC and Everton FC on Saturday, April 9 2022 was improper.
An independent Regulatory Commission found that his conduct was both improper and violent during a subsequent hearing.
Video footage showed Ronaldo, who has recently announced he is leaving Manchester United, appearing to knock a fan’s mobile phone to the ground after United’s 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park on April 9, for which the Portuguese was cautioned by Merseyside Police.
The fan in question was 14-year-old Jack Harding, of Upton, who attended the game with his monther.
A summary of the evidence and material gathered during the criminal investigation was handed to the FA in which the teenager said he was filming Ronaldo when he hit his hand “very hard” causing his telephone to fall from his hand and smash.
He said the player acted without provocation with spectator’s mother also witnessing the incident and hearing the slap.
She was “disgusted and shocked” and said Ronaldo’s PA contacted her and said, “he wanted to sort this out of the media and courts”.
She later received a text with Ronaldo's personal number inviting her to contact him if there was anything he could do.
A witness unconnected with either party or club saw Ronaldo slap the spectator’s hand “with force” and thought at the time it was “overly hard”.
Another witness unconnected with either party or club described the incident as “unprovoked”.
In a staement to the FA, Ronaldo described the atmosphere at the match as “feverish” and others as "hostile".
He was injured by a heavy tackle late in the match but remained on the pitch.
The United players left the pitch by way of a walkway which was not the regular players’ tunnel and took them close to Everton supporters.
The walkway was open and formed by metal barriers on either side and Ronaldo said the crowd was "aggressive" and he and other United players were abused by Everton supporters as they left the pitch.
He said that as he walked along the walkway, he caught sight of an arm quite low in front of him pointing towards his injured leg. He said he could not see to whom the arm belonged, but could see it was “holding an object” but he did not know what. He said his instinctive reaction was to slap “the object away”. He said this incident was “an instinctively proactive reaction”.
Ronaldo later apologised for what he described as his “outburst” and posted the following offer on his Instagram page: “I would like to invite the supporters to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play sportsmanship."
The FA responded by saying Ronaldo "could simply have walked round him (the teenage fan) or ignored him. He was walking slowly and calmly, as were the other players. Nobody appeared to act as if under threat. It was an atmosphere he would not be unfamiliar with.
"Instead, he moved his shin guard from his left to right hand and slapped down hard upon the spectator’s hand. We have little doubt this was an act born of frustration and annoyance rather than fear or concern for his wellbeing."
The 37-year-old was interviewed by police in relation to alleged assault and criminal damage and received a caution for his behaviour.
He is now a free agent following his release from Manchester United on Tuesday.
