A FASHION designer from Birkenhead has launched her new collection.
Melissa-Kate, 24, created her collection while studying at Jimmy Choo’s London Fashion Academy.
Loving fashion from a young age, Melissa-Kate said designing clothes was always her calling in life.
She told the Globe: “I've wanted to do fashion ever since I was around five years old.
“I remember drawing dresses in primary school in my textbooks instead of actually paying attention.
“My mum supported me saying I wanted to be a fashion designer from the beginning, and I think that support kept me interested in what I love.
Speaking of leaving her Birkenhead home town she said: “I was sad to leave my family behind because I’ve got so many siblings still there including my baby brother and nephews, and I miss the whole homely welcoming vibe Wirral and Liverpool always have but, moving to London has been the best thing for my career.
“Most of the UK fashion is based here and it’s taken me on so many adventures in my journey through the industry here.”
Melissa-Kate debuted her new capsule collection titled For the Love of Venus Pt.III this month at her graduate show.
The collection is the third capsule in a three-part, year-long series which Melissa describes as delving into the “spirituality, symbolism and conspiracies behind the planet Venus” with the brand's “dark romantic signature style” in the background.
Speaking of debuting her new collection Melissa-Kate said: “I just felt so proud. It’s weird because even though I’ve worked my whole life towards my dream of being a fashion designer, and that showcasing at London Fashion Week was one of my life goals, it’s really just the very start of my career in fashion. It feels like the beginning of something big.
“The feedback has been unbelievable. I love that my work is being recognised.
“It makes all the hard work feel worth it when people in the industry you have looked up to for years have admired the collection.”
The Wirral designer is part of the first cohort of Fashion Entrepreneurship in Design and Brand Innovation students at the Jimmy Choo Academy in London.
In Melissa-Kate’s words, her label is: “A world where the patriarchy doesn’t exist, influenced by the power of the divine feminine energy through witchcraft and pin-up style, hand crafted by a female for the feminine.”
She added: “As a pagan, I look to everything spiritual and use a lot of symbolism in my work. For this collection, I was inspired by a Venusian's perception of a fashion trend, which I interpreted as the death and destruction of planet earth.”
