A FLORIST has been recognised as the National Student of the Year at the British Florist Association Awards.

Andrea Borrer, from Eastham, had spent 30 years working in care when she decided to take the leap and try something new.

The 50-year-old was a regular customer at Bromborough Flowers on Allport Road before she was offered the opportunity of a career change.

Andrea told the Globe: “I would always go into the store and chat with the owner Pauline.

“One day we were talking, and she was telling me they needed more help because they were getting busier in the shop and it just went from there.”

Beginning her floristry school course during the start of the pandemic, Andrea has been training as a florist for two years.

She said: “I thought I would be too old to be an apprentice because you expect someone in that position to be around 16-17 years old but between Pauline, Paul, and The Floristry School got me through my training.”

Alongside getting qualified, Andrea still works in care part-time.

She said: “I do enjoy my job but I’ve worked in it for so long so it’s nice to have an opportunity to change.

“I absolutely love working in the shop. It’s so lovely and busy and we have loads of amazing regular customers who come in.”

On Saturday, October 15, Andrea attended the British Florist Association Awards where she was awarded the National Student of the Year award.

Speaking about the awards, Andrea said: “I was shocked when I found out. I assumed it would go to a younger person.

“Everyone there was so lovely, and we had a really great time. It was nice to meet other people in the industry as well.

“Winning the award has built my confidence because I’ve never really seen myself as a creative person, but this has helped me believe in myself. “
