ELLESMERE Port are hosting a rally in support of the 'Enough is Enough' campaign, which fights the cost-of-living crisis.

Campaign group 'Enough is Enough' has confirmed details for its national day of action on October, 1. The group, which launched in August, will be holding protests in 13 cities across the UK.

Enough is Enough has said that it will be coordinating protests against the cost of living crisis in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff, Newcastle, Hull, Norwich, Nottingham, Portsmouth and Plymouth.

Jem Borsbury, one of the founders of Ellesmere Port Collective, took it upon herself to  organise an ‘enough is enough’ style rally in the town.

Ellesmere Port Collective is a group which highlights the unique challenges facing the town, tries to raise the town’s profile and celebrates the people in the community.

Speaking to the Globe, Jem said: “Towns like the Port have powered this country for the last 100 years and yet it’s us that are most at risk from the coming crisis.

"Despite the fact we have provided the energy and fuel that keeps this country going, we aren’t receiving any of the money.

"The Port’s economy is in the billions, we import and export millions, but yet the three most deprived wards in the county are here in our town.

"Essentially what we’re seeing is more people being laid off, but the money is still there, and businesses are still doing fantastically well."

The rally is taking place to show solidarity and support to people who are going to struggle the most with the rising costs.

Also, the rally is taking place to signpost people such as The People’s Pantry, West Cheshire Foodbank, Churches and Citizen’s Advice who do amazing things for the people in the community.

Jem added: “We’ve got an economy in the billions but yet we’re feeding 100 people a week from a foodbank.

“We just want to make enough noise to feed back to Westminster and the Trade Union and to anybody who has the power to do something because we don’t.”

The 'Enough is Enough' campaign fights for a real pay rise, to slash energy bills, end food poverty, provide decent homes for all and tax the rich.

At the rally, impact statements will be read from organisations such as foodbanks, and a statement will be read on behalf of Ellesmere Port MP Justin Madders, who fully backs the campaign.

Jimmy Shannon, Whitby Groves Labour Candidate, told the Globe: "I have lived and worked in Ellesmere Port all of my life and experienced life as a working class boy through Thatcherism and now as a working class man through 12 years of Tory Austerity.

"We're still seeing families go hungry, still seeing children turning up at 'the People's Pantry' for breakfast during the summer holidays. Elderly residents within our town are worrying about wether they can heat their homes this winter. We need to recognise this, stand together, fight back and say 'Enough is Enough'."

The rally is taking place on Saturday October, 1 at 11.00am. The meeting point is at The People’s Pantry at Stanney Grange Community Centre. From 12.00pm people will walk along Stanney Lane to meet at the Civic Hall at 1.00pm.
