PLANS to extend measures aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour in two areas of Wirral are the subject of public consultation.

Residents are being asked for their views on extending two current public space protection orders (PSPOs) in New Brighton and West Kirby. The consultation will seek views on extending the PSPOs for a further two years.

A council statement read: "The PSPOs were put in place to address complaints of anti-social behaviour involving (but not limited to) intimidating groups, littering, urinating, unauthorised vehicles on grassed areas and alcohol-related disorder.

"This activity has previously had a detrimental effect on the local environment resulting in damage being caused as well as causing nuisance, annoyance and disruption to members of the public, business owners and their employees."

If the PSPO is extended, it would expire on September 3, 2024. There is no proposed change to the wording of the Order.

If the PSPO is not extended, it will expire at midnight on September 3 this year.

The measure will be enforced by authorised Council Officers, Police Community Support Officers and Police Officers.

Served under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing act 2014, it is intended to deal with particular nuisances or problems in a defined area that are considered to be detrimental to the local community’s quality of life.

It can do this by imposing conditions on the use of that area which will apply to everyone so that the majority of people can enjoy the public space.

The council statement continued: "The Council has the power to implement, extend or vary PSPOs with the purpose of stopping individuals or groups committing anti-social behaviour in public spaces.

"It will be an offence to, without reasonable excuse, do anything that the person is prohibited from doing by a Public Spaces Protection Order. A person guilty of such an offence is liable to a fine on prosecution (currently a maximum of £1,000).

"Authorised officers can issue a Fixed Penalty Notice (£100) if appropriate."
