FIGURES from data firm Experian Catalist show the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts reached a record 182.3p on Wednesday.

This is the largest daily jump in petrol prices for 17 years, with the cost of filling a typical family car exceeding £100 for the first time today.

Some sites in the UK have already begun selling petrol above £2 per litre.

The Prime Minister's offical spokesman said: “We are continuing to look at all possible options. Transparency may have an important role to play.

“It is important the public understand what actions each of the fuel retailers are taking and so we are considering what further options we can take.”

With many affected by the rising petrol costs, locals across Wirral have expressed their thoughts and concerns online.

Chris Carlin wrote: “£98 to fuel mine up now. This time last year it was £48-50, getting beyond a joke now.”

Daryl Ellis added: “Absolute joke, it’s costing us over £120 a week for our work van, right con!”
