Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy said: "To target someone in this way while they are carrying out their daily business in the community is utterly despicable and we are working to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

"The area around Harrington Street, North John Street and the Hard Day’s Night hotel would have been very busy yesterday afternoon.

"If you were in the area and saw anything or anyone suspicious then please get in touch.

"It was also reported that two passers-by also spoke to the victim to check he was ok following the incident, who may have seen something.

"If this was you then please contact us, as information you hold could be vital to our enquiries.

"Similarly, if you were driving in the area around North John Street and have dashcam footage then please review it and let us know if you see anything.

"Whether you contact us directly, or anonymously through Crimestoppers, all information will be acted upon."
