A PUB in Eastham has been collecting donations and cash to send to the border to help Ukrainian families.
The Hooton Arms began their appeal last Tuesday and have since raised £4,500 alongside filling a van with humanitarian aid items including toiletries, food, nappies, and first aid kits.
Regular customers, Bruce Hamilton, Keith Molyneux, and Dave Mills, set off on their journey to the border at 11pm last night, Monday, March 29.
Pub landlord, Lewis Evans, who has organised the appeal, said he has been “amazed” by people’s generosity.
He told the Globe: “Myself and a couple of customers were sat there having a pint together and we decided to do something to help the people of Ukraine.
“Since we launched the appeal last week it’s been amazing.
“People who don’t even come into the pub have been coming in to donate money and items. It seems people just want to help.”
When they arrive at the border, Bruce, Keith, and Dave also hope to spend a day volunteering helping those who need it most.
Lewis said: “The main aim is to get as close to the border as possible and then do a day of work to help out.”
Lewis said the pub has been “inundated” with support since the launch of the appeal.
He said: “I wasn’t expecting this type of reaction.
“We’ve been inundated with support from everyone and their donations we probably could have filled two vans if we’d had to.
“I’ve been amazed by it. We want to thank the local community for everything they’ve done in such a short space of time.”
