Wirral will be well represented at a national school running final after scooping 50% of the regional qualifying places.
Schools from across the borough competed in the North West Final of the English Schools XC Cup on Saturday (November 13) against every school district in the region.
Each school was packed with young runners from Wirral Athletics Club’s endurance program, and they proved that the Wirral school district is a force to be reckoned with in cross country, swallowing up half of the places on offer for the National Finals in Newquay on December 5.
Wirral AC coach, Ronan Kearney, said: “We are delighted to help the local schools achieve success and very much hope that Wirral can bring home a National title.
"In the last few days we have had contact from many young athletes in schools who would like to join, and in addition, two schools have been in touch.
“We will do our very best to work with everyone and trial evenings are Thursday at 6.30pm at the Oval in Bebington.”
There will be around 30 young athletes from the Wirral Endurance Program running for their schools at the National finals. No other schools in Merseyside qualified for the National Finals outside Wirral.
Meanwhile, Wirral AC had more cause for celebration on Monday night.
In recognition of their work in the community, and the success of their innovative team-based coaching model, the club was named England Athletics North West Club of the Year.
In granting the award, the Chairman noted that Wirral had a reputation as a forward looking and innovative club.
Wirral AC will now represent the North West of England at the National awards in London in January.
