A WIRRAL rugby club hit hard by the pandemic has praised the 'incredible' response to a fundraising campaign that will help it get back on its feet and prepare for a milestone celebration.

Loss of revenue from venue hire and events during the pandemic meant Wallasey Rugby Club could not afford essential repairs to the floodlights, changing room and toilets or create a covered outdoor space as planned for this year.

With the club celebrating its centenary in 2026, it desperately needed modernisation.

It raised a Crowdfunder appeal that has raised an incredible £33,684.

Described by the club as "a triumph for community spirit and a great show of generosity from supporters", it means the club can carry out vital work and grow as it approaches its 100th birthday.

Accessible disabled toilet facilities will mean people with disabilities and mobility issues feel welcomed at the club and improvements to the changing facilities will accommodate the increase in rugby players.

New floodlights will enable training all year around and more night time rugby when the season starts and a covered outdoor seating area will increase capacity and support the club with Covid guidelines.

Praising the response to the fundraising campaign, club President David Bott (picture, by Phil Perez, below) said: "I can't tell you enough how delighted we are to have hit our target.

"This means so much to the club and everyone involved.

Wirral Globe:

"It's been a great team effort and everyone connected to the club has really got behind us.

"A huge thank you to all who have donated - especially those who aren't associated with the club.

"It's really touching."

He continued: "We must also thank all the local businesses who have supported us through direct donations and sponsorship boards, and also the ones who have donated rewards as prizes.

"Then there’s the media companies such as BBC Radio Merseyside, The Liverpool Echo, the Wirral Globe, The Guide Liverpool, Explore Liverpool and others who have helped promote our campaign.

"It's just been amazing!"
