From Dixie Dean to Daniel Craig the peninsula has been responsible for some of the best musicians, sports people, and television stars in the country.

Here are some of the few most notable that call this Merseyside borough their home.

1. Paul Hollywood

This celebrity chef from Wallasey is most noticeable from him time judging on The Great British Bake Off.

He attended The Mosslands School before attending Wallasey School of Art where he studied sculpture.

2. Daniel Craig

The current James Bond was born in Chester but spent many years in Hoylake where he was raised.

He attended Hoylake Primary School and Hilbre High School in West Kirby before moving to Liverpool after his parents divorce.

A keen sportsman, Craig played for Hoylake RFC Rugby Union Club and remains an passionate Liverpool FC supporter – he’s even been spotted at Anfield a couple of times!

3. Shirley Ballas

This Strictly Come Dancing star judge was born and bred in Wallasey and began dancing from the age of seven and started competing only a year later.

By the age of 21 this Latin American dancing queen had won every major title she had competed in.

4. Dixie Dean

This iconic Everton Football Club player was born on Laird Street in Birkenhead in 1907.

He attended Laird Street School and later went to the Albert Memorial Industrial School in Birkenhead.

Dixie scored 60 goals in a single football league season, a record yet to be broken.

He spent several years working for Wirral Railway before signing to Pensby United and then Tranmere Rovers.

5. Paul O’ Grady

One on the country’s favourite comedic presenters, Paul O’Grady was born in Birkenhead and was raised in his family home in Holly Grove, Tranmere.

During his time between Liverpool and London, Paul’s drag act, Lily Savage, became a popular hit which brought him his TV appearance on Channel 4’s comedy show, Viva Cabaret.

This is what then led him to presenting The Paul O’Grady Show on ITV which first aired in 2004.

6. Chris Boardman

This Olympic gold medallist was born in Hoylake and educated at Hilbre High School.

Chris still lives in Wirral with his wife and six children and carried the Olympic Torch through Birkenhead Park in 2012.

7. The Coral

This five-piece was formed in 1996 in Hoylake when schoolfriends Ian Skelly and Paul Duffy began playing together.

The band consisted of James Skelly on vocals, Bill Ryder-Jones on lead guitar, Lee Southall on rhythm guitar and Nick Power of keyboard.

Bill-Ryder-Jones left the band in 2008 to pursue his own solo career.

8. Harold Wilson

This former Labour prime minister was head boy at Wirral Grammar School for Boys.

Originally from Huddersfield, Wilson moved to Spital when he was 14 years old.

9. Andrew Irvine

Everest mountaineer Andrew Irvine was born in Birkenhead in 1902 and attended Birkenhead School.

On June 6 Andrew and his expedition member, George Mallory attempted to climb Mount Everest but failed to complete it.

The pair were last sighted on June 8, 1924 just a few hundred yards from the summit of Everest. Mallory's well-preserved body was found in 1999 but Irvine's body is yet to be found.

10. Miles Kane

Previously the frontman of Wirral band The Rascals, Miles Kane was born in Birkenhead and grew up in Meols.

This musician is best known as the co-frontman of The Last Shadow Puppets with Arctic Monkey’s frontman Alex Turner.

Now the singer has a solo career with three albums.

11. John Peel

This iconic Heswell-born disc jockey was the longest serving of the Radio 1 DJs.

He broadcasted regularly from 1967 until he died in 2004.
