A Wirral cake maker has enjoyed a surge in demand during lockdown after adding different ingredients to her business model.
Sue Pinnick, 47, has seen a huge increase in cake orders in the last 12 months – with customers living as far afield as Australia, Canada, Germany, Malta, Sweden and the Netherlands ordering her “Lockdown Cakes” for their relatives living on the Wirral.
The owner of Yummy Cakes by Sue said that additional requests from across Europe, North America, Australia and all over the UK and Ireland have led to her business thriving.
Sue told the Globe: “At the start of lockdown, I quickly realised people no longer needed my larger, more elaborate cakes due to the widespread cancellation of events such as weddings and christenings.
“I knew that, in order to save my business, I would need to make a big change. That’s when I decided to design a smaller type of cake covered in buttercream, with a personalised cake topper, to be delivered to doorsteps all over Wirral."
Instead of making a couple of cakes a week, Sue, who lives in Spital, revealed she is now making anything up to 20 and doesn’t want to go back to the time-consuming, complex sugarpaste designs.
Sue added: “I love delivering a little bit of happiness to people’s doors. Everyone is still having birthdays and anniversaries during lockdown, so it’s great helping them to celebrate milestones.
"The oldest person I have made a birthday cake for was 105! I really thought I was going to have to close my business, but since changing my design, it has really taken off.
"To see people’s faces when I deliver a cake is just amazing.”
