A former Wirral council leader has decided not to accept the role of Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner.
Phil Davies was controversially offered the position last week without interview, in a bid to fill the role quickly, sparking a barage of criticism.
But the former Labour Council leader has now decided not to take up the role.
In a statement released to the Globe, he said: “When Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, Jane Kennedy, invited me to become her Deputy I was extremely flattered.
“I have now reflected and have decided that, given the level of commitment required, I do not feel I could do justice to this important role.
“I have therefore informed Jane that I no longer wish to pursue my interest and will continue enjoying my retirement.
“I would like to thank Jane for considering me for this post and wish her all the best for the future.”
Mr Davies led Wirral Council for seven years until May 2019.
