THERE will be a chance to quiz parliamentary candidates for Wirral West on what they will do to avert climate breakdown if elected during a hustings debate tomorrow night.
The event, at Hoylake Parade Community Centre in Hoylake, is organised by Liverpool Friends of the Earth and starts at 7.30pm.
Don Naylor, joint co-ordinator of Liverpool Friends of the Earth and a local constituent of Wirral West, said: "It's essential that the Government we elect on Thursday 12 December shows leadership and ambition to tackle climate change at the pace and scale demanded by the scientific evidence.
"Meeting the parliamentary candidates will give local voters and environmental campaigners the chance to judge for themselves how climate-friendly Wirral West's prospective MPs are.
"Real leadership from a local MP comes through action, not words, and that's why we want the government to stop climate-wrecking plans for more roads, runways and all fossil fuels extraction and instead put carbon-cutting at the heart of all government policy."
All nominated parliamentary candidates for Wirral West have been invited and those confirmed as attending so far include Andy Corkihll (Lib Dems), John Coyne (Green Party) and Margaret Greenwood (Labour).
According to research recently published by Friends of the Earth, 44% of emissions in the Wirral local authority area come from housing, 26% from transport, and 30% are industrial and commercial emissions.
Upgrading the insulation of 9,635 homes per year within the Wirral area and increasing tree cover to 20% are just some of the measures recommended by Friends of the Earth to tackle the climate emergency.
Friends of the Earth also recommends a target of 50% of people commuting by public transport, cycling, and walking by 2030.
