TWO Wirral nurses are set to take on the Dumball Rally for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Deborah Smedley, a staff nurse at Arrowe Park Hospital, will take on the challenge with the help of her fiancé David Houghton and team mates Mark Scott and Philomena Horan, a staff nurse at Clatterbridge Hospital, in a Pikachu themed car.

Now in its tenth year, the world-famous fancy dress festival on wheels is an extreme driving challenge.

The team will depart from Margate on September 14 in a convoy of brilliantly decorated bangers bound for Corfu.

First travelling to Calais, the team will then cross the Alps, swing by Venice, drive through Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania before boarding a ferry on September 21 to Corfu.

David said: "All four of us are so excited about setting off on another Dumball adventure to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

"We hope our little Pikachu car bought for £350 and painted by hand with foam ears and a wooden tail will make it all the way to Corfu via the Alps and Montenegro pass to really earn our sponsorship target of £4,000 to help teenagers and young adults and their families deal with the trauma of cancer."

So far the challenge has raised more than £850,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust and this year are hoping to smash a £1 million target.

Teenage Cancer Trust regional fundraiser Emma Cross told the Globe: “The Dumball Challenge is such a unique challenge, and attracts a group of very loyal supporters.

"The team have great fun along the route, and it is incredible to see that now in its 10th year the challenge has raised over £850,000.

"As a charity we rely on voluntary donations and the support of the local community through events like these to ensure young people with cancer and their families have access to the best possible care and support.

"A huge thank to David and his team for their support and helping raise awareness and funds for Teenage Cancer Trust.”
