A NEW campaign has been launched to improve hospital care for people with a learning disability.
'Treat Me Well' is a three year campaign from charity Mencap and will work alongside Wirral University Teaching Hospital to meet the aims of the campaign.
A launch event held at Arrowe Park Hospital on Thursday informed people with learning disabilities and hospital staff about the campaign and its objectives which include training for staff and a greater emphasis on making adjustments to the care and treatment of people with learning disabilities.
It is estimated around 1,200 people with learning disabilities die avoidably every year.
Chief executive of Wirral Mencap Chloe Harvey said: “We need to work together to tackle the issue of avoidable deaths and to improve general patient care for those with a learning disability.
"It is great to have University Teaching Hospital on board and we look forward to working with them and our National Mencap colleagues over the next three years.
“The event this week was a chance for us to kick-start this national campaign in Wirral and to get people with a learning disability, family members and hospital staff on board.”
